Bill Summary

The Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Extension Act of 2019 is a bill that proposes to extend the termination of sanctions against Venezuela, which were originally put in place in 2014 as part of the Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act. This bill would change the date for the termination of sanctions from December 31, 2019 to December 31, 2021. This means that the sanctions, which were intended to address human rights violations in Venezuela, will continue to be in effect for an additional two years. This bill was introduced in the United States Congress and must be passed by both the Senate and House of Representatives in order to become a law.

Possible Impacts

1. The extension of sanctions could potentially limit the access of Venezuelans to certain goods and services, making it more difficult for them to obtain basic necessities like food and medicine.
2. The continuation of sanctions could also lead to economic instability in Venezuela, affecting the livelihoods of its citizens and potentially causing job loss and financial struggles for many individuals and families.
3. This legislation could also result in strained diplomatic relations between the United States and Venezuela, possibly impacting the ability of Venezuelans to travel or study in the US, and vice versa.
