Bill Summary

The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act is being amended to provide relief for commercial fisheries that have experienced failure due to certain duties. This includes increases in duties on seafood products as a result of retaliatory actions taken by other countries in response to duties imposed by the United States under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 or the Trade Act of 1974. This bill aims to support and help mitigate the negative impacts on commercial fisheries caused by these duties.

Possible Impacts

1. The amendment to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act could provide relief to commercial fishermen who have experienced a decline in their catch due to changes in environmental regulations. This could affect people working in the fishing industry by providing financial assistance during a difficult time.

2. The amendment could also provide relief to fishermen who have been affected by increases in duties on US seafood products, as retaliation for tariffs imposed by the United States. This could impact people working in the fishing industry, as well as consumers who may see an increase in prices for seafood products.

3. The amendment could potentially lead to increased tensions between the United States and other countries involved in seafood trade, as it allows for retaliation through increased duties. This could have a broader impact on the economy and potentially affect people in other industries.
