Bill Summary
This legislation, known as the "Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Pipeline Projects Act," requires the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to take into account the potential environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions when considering the approval of a natural gas pipeline. This includes considering emissions from the construction and operation of the pipeline, as well as the production, transportation, and combustion of the natural gas that will flow through it. The bill aims to address the impact of fossil fuel use on climate change and promote more environmentally-friendly energy practices.
Possible Impacts
1. This legislation could potentially increase the cost of natural gas pipelines, which could lead to higher prices for consumers who rely on natural gas for heating and other energy needs.
2. It could also lead to delays or cancellations of pipeline projects if the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission determines that the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the projects are too high.
3. The legislation may also spark debate and controversy among different interest groups, such as environmentalists and the natural gas industry, as they advocate for their respective positions on the issue.
