Bill Summary

This is a bill that authorizes the Secretary of the department in which the Coast Guard is operating to establish a program called the Coast Guard Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) in cooperation with Pinellas Park High School in Florida. This pilot program will provide instruction and training to students in subject areas related to the operations and skills of the Coast Guard. The Secretary may also provide additional support to the high school, such as course development and materials, and may allow retired Coast Guard personnel to be employed as administrators and instructors for the JROTC program. These individuals will be entitled to their retired or retainer pay, and the school will receive funding to cover half of this amount. The term "Secretary" refers to the head of the department in which the Coast Guard is operating. This bill also includes other provisions and definitions that are relevant to the implementation of the JROTC program.

Possible Impacts

1. The legislation could provide opportunities for students at Pinellas Park High School to receive specialized instruction and training in areas related to the Coast Guard. This could potentially benefit students who are interested in pursuing a career in the Coast Guard, but may not have had access to such resources before.
2. The legislation could also potentially create job opportunities for retired Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve personnel, giving them the chance to continue utilizing their skills and expertise while also receiving additional pay.
3. The legislation could also potentially benefit Pinellas Park High School by providing them with resources and support to establish and maintain the program, such as assistance with course development and necessary materials. This could enhance the school's reputation and potentially attract more students.
