Bill Summary

The "Strengthening American Nuclear Energy Act of 2026" is proposed legislation aimed at codifying specific Executive Orders related to nuclear energy that were issued on May 23, 2025. The Act would formally incorporate the following orders into law:

1. **Executive Order 14301**: Focuses on reforming nuclear reactor testing procedures at the Department of Energy to enhance efficiency and safety.
2. **Executive Order 14299**: Aims to promote the deployment of advanced nuclear reactor technologies to bolster national security.
3. **Executive Order 14300**: Directs reforms within the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to improve regulatory processes and oversight.
4. **Executive Order 14302**: Seeks to revitalize the nuclear industrial base to ensure a robust domestic nuclear energy sector.

By codifying these Executive Orders, the Act seeks to provide a legislative foundation for the ongoing development and regulation of nuclear energy in the United States, thereby strengthening the nation's energy infrastructure and security.

Possible Impacts

The "Strengthening American Nuclear Energy Act of 2026" could affect people in several ways, including the following:

1. **Job Creation and Economic Growth**: By reinvigorating the nuclear industrial base, as outlined in Executive Order 14302, the legislation could lead to the creation of new jobs in the nuclear energy sector. This may result in increased employment opportunities for engineers, technicians, and support staff, contributing to local economies, especially in regions where nuclear facilities are located.

2. **Increased Energy Security**: The deployment of advanced nuclear reactor technologies for national security, as stated in Executive Order 14299, could enhance the United States' energy independence. This could lead to more stable energy prices and reduce reliance on foreign energy sources, potentially benefiting consumers who might otherwise face fluctuations in energy costs.

3. **Enhanced Safety and Regulatory Confidence**: The reform of nuclear reactor testing and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as described in Executive Orders 14301 and 14300, could improve the safety standards and oversight of nuclear energy operations. This might increase public trust in nuclear energy as a safe power source, addressing concerns about accidents and environmental impact, and potentially leading to greater acceptance of nuclear energy projects in communities.
