Bill Summary
The Timber Production Expansion Guaranteed Loan Program is a bill that establishes requirements for the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of the Interior to carry out a program that provides loan guarantees to eligible entities for establishing, reopening, retrofitting, expanding, or improving sawmills or other wood-processing facilities in rural areas near high priority federal lands. This is intended to decrease the cost of conducting ecological restoration projects involving vegetation removal. The bill also sets a maximum amount of $220 million for loan guarantees to be provided under the program. It is also known as the "SAWMILL Act".
Possible Impacts
1. The legislation could potentially affect people who own or operate sawmills or wood-processing facilities located in rural areas, as they may now have access to loan guarantees that could help them establish, reopen, retrofit, expand, or improve their businesses. This could lead to an increase in job opportunities and economic growth in these areas.
2. Individuals who live in or near high priority federal lands may be impacted by the presence of sawmills or wood-processing facilities in their area. This could lead to changes in the landscape and potentially impact the local environment and wildlife.
3. The legislation may also affect taxpayers, as the government will be providing loan guarantees totaling up to $220,000,000. This could potentially lead to increased taxes or cuts in other government programs to cover the cost of these loan guarantees.
