Bill Summary

The Haiti Economic Lift Program Extension Act of 2021 is a bill that aims to extend the duty-free treatment currently provided under the Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act to imports from Haiti. This bill is being proposed by the Senate and House of Representatives in the United States, and if enacted, will extend certain special rules for Haiti under the Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act. These rules include increasing the threshold for determining whether a product is considered to be made in Haiti, and extending the time period for which this duty-free treatment will apply. This bill is also known as the "Haiti Economic Lift Program Extension Act of 2021" and aims to support economic recovery in Haiti by extending this trade agreement until the year 2035.

Possible Impacts

1. The Haiti Economic Lift Program Extension Act could help stimulate trade and economic growth in Haiti, potentially providing job opportunities and increased access to goods for Haitian citizens.
2. The extension of duty-free treatment for imports from Haiti could make certain products more affordable for people in the United States, potentially benefiting low-income individuals and families.
3. The legislation could also potentially have negative effects, such as leading to an increase in imported goods from Haiti and potentially harming domestic industries and businesses in the United States, which could in turn affect American workers and consumers.
