Bill Summary

This bill, if passed, would direct the Joint Committee on the Library to obtain a statue of Shirley Chisholm, a notable figure in American history, and place it in a permanent location in the United States Capitol. The Joint Committee would have 5 years to enter into an agreement to obtain the statue, and the necessary funds would be authorized for this purpose. The Architect of the Capitol may be authorized to enter into contracts on behalf of the Joint Committee.

Possible Impacts

1. This legislation could affect people by honoring the legacy of Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to the United States Congress, and providing representation for marginalized communities in the United States Capitol building. This can serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for people from underrepresented groups who visit the Capitol.

2. The legislation could also affect individuals involved in the process of obtaining and placing the statue, such as the Joint Committee on the Library and the Architect of the Capitol. They would have to navigate the terms and conditions set forth in the agreement and contracts, as well as ensure compliance with applicable laws.

3. The authorization of appropriations could affect taxpayers, as their money may be used to fund the obtaining and placement of the statue. Supporters of the legislation may see this as a worthwhile investment in promoting diversity and representation in government, while opponents may view it as a misuse of funds.
