Bill Summary

This legislation, known as the "Smithsonian and National Gallery of Art Collections Space Authorization Act," aims to provide additional space and resources for the protection and preservation of national collections held by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. It authorizes the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution and the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Art to plan, design, construct, operate, and use a collections storage space in Suitland, Maryland for the care, preservation, conservation, storage, and study of national collections. The legislation also authorizes appropriations for the project, with specific amounts allocated for each fiscal year. A conforming amendment is also included to make sure that this new section does not conflict with any other sections of the Public Law.

Possible Impacts

1. The legislation could affect employees or staff members of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art, as they may be responsible for planning, designing, constructing, operating, and using the collections storage space mentioned in the bill. They may also have to negotiate and enter into agreements with the Boards of Regents and Trustees of their respective institutions.
2. The legislation could affect the funding and budgeting for the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art, as it authorizes specific amounts to be appropriated for the construction of the collections storage space.
3. The legislation could affect the care, preservation, conservation, storage, and study of national collections held in trust by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art, as it specifically mentions these responsibilities and tasks to be carried out in the new collections storage space. This could impact how these collections are managed and accessed by the public.
