Bill Summary

This legislation, known as the "Center for Artificial Intelligence of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Act," establishes a center within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) dedicated to coordinating and facilitating scientific and technological efforts related to artificial intelligence (AI). The center's goals include improving the use of AI systems across NOAA and expanding partnerships to effectively apply AI research and applications. The center will also prioritize coordinating research, establishing data standards, accelerating the transition of AI research to applications, conducting training, and making NOAA data accessible for AI applications. The legislation authorizes a $10 million budget for fiscal year 2021 to support the establishment and operation of the center.

Possible Impacts

1. Access to data: The development of a central repository for artificial intelligence applications and the accessibility of data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration could greatly benefit researchers and private sector organizations looking to develop new technologies or improve existing ones. This could potentially lead to advancements in weather forecasting, climate change research, and disaster management.

2. Workforce training: The allocation of funds for training the workforce of the Administration in artificial intelligence could provide new job opportunities and help individuals gain valuable skills in a growing field. This could potentially lead to job creation and economic growth.

3. Collaboration and partnerships: The collaboration and partnerships between the Administration and other organizations, such as private sector entities and institutions of higher education, could lead to the exchange of knowledge and resources, resulting in more efficient and innovative use of artificial intelligence in various industries. This could potentially benefit both the government and the private sector in terms of improved decision making and problem solving.
