Bill Summary

The Esther Martinez Native American Languages Programs Reauthorization Act is a legislation that amends the Native American Programs Act of 1974 in order to provide flexibility and reauthorization for programs that support and preserve Native American languages. This act is aimed at ensuring the survival and continuing vitality of these languages. The act includes provisions for a Native American Languages Grant Program, which provides funding for language preservation and education programs. It also reauthorizes the Native American Languages Program for the years 2020-2024, with a budget of $13 million per year. A technical correction is also made in the act to ensure proper references to subsections.

Possible Impacts

1. This legislation could potentially affect Native American individuals by providing funding and resources to support the preservation and revitalization of their languages, which may have been in danger of dying out due to prior suppression and cultural assimilation efforts.

2. The amendment to section 803C of the Native American Programs Act could impact the allocation and distribution of grants to Native American language programs and organizations. This could potentially impact the availability of resources and support for these programs, which in turn could affect the ability of Native American communities to maintain and pass down their languages to future generations.

3. The reauthorization of the Native American Languages Program could impact the federal budget by allocating $13,000,000 for each fiscal year from 2020 to 2024. This could potentially affect the overall federal budget and the allocation of resources to other programs and initiatives.
