Bill Summary

The Cahokia Mounds Mississippian Culture National Historical Park Act is a bill that was passed by the United States Congress to establish a historical park in the states of Illinois and Missouri. The purpose of the park is to preserve and interpret the historical, cultural, and natural resources related to the Mississippian Culture for present and future generations. The park will be managed by the Secretary of the Interior and will be subject to laws and regulations applicable to other National Park System units. The boundary of the park is defined by a map, and the Secretary must acquire enough land to constitute a manageable unit before the park can be officially established. The park will be administered through cooperative agreements with states, political subdivisions, institutions, and organizations, and a general management plan must be created within 3 years of the bill's passing. The plan will be developed in consultation with various stakeholders, including the States, Indian tribes, and other affected individuals and groups.

Possible Impacts

1. The establishment of the Cahokia Mounds Mississippian Culture National Historical Park may limit the land available for development in Collinsville, Illinois, Monroe, Madison, and St. Clair Counties in Illinois, and St. Louis City County, Missouri. This could affect people who live in those areas and rely on land for economic purposes, such as agriculture or real estate development.
2. The limitation on land acquisition to only donation for properties owned by the States or political subdivisions could affect the budget and resources available for these entities. This could potentially impact the services and programs they provide to their residents.
3. The requirement for a general management plan and consultation with various organizations and groups may lead to changes in the use and access of the historical park. This could affect tourists and visitors who may have different expectations and experiences at the park compared to before the legislation was enacted.
