Bill Summary

This bill, called the "Prevent Tariff Abuse Act," aims to amend the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by prohibiting the President from imposing duties, tariff-rate quotas, or other quotas on goods entering the United States under this act. The IEEPA currently grants the President the authority to take certain economic actions during emergencies, and this bill aims to limit this power by excluding the imposition of duties and import quotas. This bill would prevent the President from using trade policies as a means of addressing an international economic crisis and would require other forms of action to be taken.

Possible Impacts

1. The Prevent Tariff Abuse Act could affect people by limiting the power of the President to impose import duties and quotas, which could potentially lead to lower prices for imported goods and increased access to a wider range of products for consumers.
2. The Act could also have an impact on domestic industries, as it may result in decreased protection against foreign competition and potentially harm the competitiveness of certain American businesses.
3. The legislation could also affect the economy as a whole by potentially creating a more open market for international trade, leading to changes in job opportunities and economic growth.
