Bill Summary

This legislation, called the American Meat Industry Protection Act of 2023, aims to prohibit the use of federal funds to support the production and advancement of lab-grown meat. This includes conducting or funding research on lab-grown meat, supporting meatpacking plants or organizations focused on lab-grown meat, and excluding any entities that produce lab-grown meat from receiving assistance or benefits from the Department of Agriculture. The legislation defines lab-grown meat as meat that is artificially produced in a laboratory using cells from animals.

Possible Impacts

1. This legislation could have a negative impact on the lab-grown meat industry, potentially limiting the availability and accessibility of lab-grown meat products for those who choose to consume them. This could affect individuals who are looking for alternative sources of protein, or those who have dietary restrictions or ethical concerns with traditional meat production.
2. The legislation could also affect research and development in the field of lab-grown meat, potentially hindering scientific progress and innovation. This could have an impact on scientists and researchers who are working on developing more sustainable and ethical meat production methods.
3. The exclusion of lab-grown meat producers from receiving any assistance or benefits from programs administered by the Secretary of Agriculture could have economic implications, potentially limiting the growth and success of these businesses. This could affect the livelihoods of individuals employed in the lab-grown meat industry.
