Bill Summary
This legislation, known as the "Ruth Bader Ginsburg Statue Bill," directs the Joint Committee on the Library to obtain a statue or bust of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a former Supreme Court Justice, and place it in National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol. The Joint Committee has a deadline of 2 years after the enactment of this bill to enter into an agreement to obtain the statue or bust. The location for the statue or bust will be determined by the Joint Committee. Additionally, this bill waives the waiting period typically required for new statues or busts under Public Law 109-116. Finally, this bill authorizes the appropriation of necessary funds to carry out its requirements.
Possible Impacts
1. The legislation could affect people by honoring and memorializing the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, particularly for those who admire and respect her as a pioneer for women's rights and gender equality.
2. People could be affected by the allocation of funds for the statue or bust, as taxpayers may have differing opinions on the use of government funds for this purpose.
3. The legislation could also potentially spark discussion and debate about the representation of historical figures in National Statuary Hall and the criteria for selecting individuals to be honored in this way.
