Bill Summary
The Abbas Stop Drunk Driving Act is a proposed bill that would require the Secretary of Transportation to create a safety standard for motor vehicles that includes an ignition interlock device. This device would prevent a vehicle from being operated if the driver is intoxicated, as determined by a blood alcohol concentration test. The bill also includes definitions for "motor vehicle" and "motor vehicle safety standard."
Possible Impacts
1) The legislation could affect people who operate motor vehicles while under the influence of alcohol. These individuals would be required to have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle, which would prevent them from operating the vehicle if they are intoxicated.
2) The legislation could affect car manufacturers who would have to make sure that all new vehicles are equipped with an ignition interlock device. This could result in increased production costs and potentially higher prices for new vehicles.
3) The legislation could also affect law enforcement officials who would now have the authority to enforce the use of ignition interlock devices and potentially lead to increased arrests for driving under the influence.
