Bill Summary
This bill aims to terminate certain waivers of sanctions with respect to Iran that were issued in connection with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). These waivers allowed for certain nuclear activities to take place in Iran without facing sanctions. However, with the termination of these waivers, the President is not able to issue new ones for these activities. The bill specifically names three activities - redesigning the Arak reactor, transferring enriched uranium for the Tehran Research Reactor, and modifying centrifuge cascades for nonsensitive purposes at the Fordow facility. The term "Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action" refers to the agreement signed in 2015 by Iran, France, Germany, Russia, China, UK, and US, along with all related implementing materials and agreements. The overall purpose of this bill is to impose sanctions on Iran in regards to nuclear activities.
Possible Impacts
1. The termination of certain waivers of sanctions could affect businesses and individuals who have been conducting nuclear activities in or with Iran, as they will no longer be able to receive exemptions from certain sanctions. This could have financial and operational implications for these entities.
2. The legislation could also affect the relationship between the United States and other countries involved in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as the termination of waivers could strain diplomatic ties and cause tension among the signatory nations.
3. The termination of waivers for nuclear activities could have a direct impact on the development and progression of Iran's nuclear program, as they will no longer have access to certain materials and technologies. This could have far-reaching consequences for the country and its people, both politically and economically.
