Bill Summary

This legislation authorizes the Secretary of Education to provide grants for education programs on the history of the treatment of Italian Americans during World War II. These grants, with a maximum amount of $50,000 each, will be awarded to eligible entities (such as Italian-American historical and cultural organizations) to develop and implement public awareness education programs. To be selected for a grant, an eligible entity must submit an application to the Secretary. The legislation also gives priority to Italian-American organizations in awarding these grants and authorizes $3,000,000 for fiscal year 2020 for these purposes.

Possible Impacts

1. The legislation could provide funding for Italian-American historical and cultural organizations to develop and implement educational programs on the history of Italian Americans during World War II. This could lead to increased awareness and understanding of the experiences of Italian Americans during the war.
2. The maximum grant amount of $50,000 could limit the number of organizations that are able to receive funding and may prevent some smaller or underfunded organizations from being able to participate in the program.
3. The legislation could potentially exclude other groups or communities who were also impacted by World War II, as it specifically focuses on the treatment of Italian Americans. This could lead to feelings of exclusion or discrimination for these groups.
