Bill Summary

The Classroom to Careers Act of 2019 is a bill proposed to amend the Federal Work-Study program. The purpose of this bill is to expand and enhance the use of Federal Work-Study by students for both part-time and full-time, off-campus cooperative education and other work-based learning experiences. It allows institutions of higher education to use their Federal Work-Study allocations for these types of programs with nonprofit, government, and for-profit employers. The bill also aligns participation in the program with career pathways and defines cooperative education as alternating or parallel periods of academic study and work-based learning.

Possible Impacts

1. This legislation would allow students to use their Federal Work-Study allocations for full-time, off-campus cooperative education and work-based learning. This could positively impact students by providing them with valuable work experience and potentially helping them to finance their education.
2. The Act also aims to expand and enhance the use of Federal Work-Study for part-time and full-time work experiences with various types of employers. This could potentially create more job opportunities for students and give them a wider range of experiences to choose from.
3. Additionally, the Act includes language about aligning work-study participation with career pathways, which could benefit students by helping them to gain experience and skills in their desired career field while also earning income.
